Shining Some Light on the Ugly Debate

In 2007, the congressional attempts to reform our broken immigration system led to an intense debate that played itself out on the cable and network broadcasts. In addition to the race-baiting perpetuated by some anti-immigrant commentators, conversations about immigration in the media often left stereotypes and misinformation unchecked.

But that was only the tip of the iceberg. On the Internet and in local communities, the ugly side of the immigration debate became even uglier. Comparisons of undocumented immigrants to terrorists, murderers, and rapists were commonplace in these arenas. We applaud the directors/producers of "9500 Liberty" for shedding some light on how ugly the debate can get in one community, and how a community can organize to fight back.
