Truth in Immigration
From Lou Dobbs Tonight, May 30, 2007:
DOBBS: [T]oday's scurrilous personal attack from "The New York Times" columnist David Leonhardt, carrying the water of the Southern Poverty Law Center, also has the facts wrong.
Recently, the Reason Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank based in Los Angeles, published a helpful chart on the complexities of the legal immigration system.
The Immigration Policy Center released a new Fact Sheet titled “Fewer Job Openings Equals Fewer Immigrants.” The analysis shows undocumented immigration to the US has slowed, primarily due to the lagging U.S. economy. MORE
As NCLR President and CEO Janet Murgia has often stated: "Words have consequences, and hateful words have hateful consequences." It doesn’t take much to connect the rising level of anti-immigrant rhetoric and misinformation to the rising level of hate crimes committed towards Latinos. MORE
Part One of "Lou Dobbs' Convention of Lies" analyzed several distortions Lou made on his September 10th edition of Lou Dobbs Tonight, at a rally by the Federation for American Immigration Reform. For Part Two, click on the video below
Recently, anti-immigrant activists Mark Krikorian and Michelle Malkin commented on the causes of the current financial crisis. Krikorian, of the Center for Immigration Studies, juxtaposed the downfall of Washington Mutual with its competitive diversity policies and programs, insinuating that minority employees were responsible for the bank’s failure.
It may come as surprise to some anti-immigrant hate groups that California’s immigrants are assimilating into mainstream society. But really, it shouldn’t. The Los Angeles Times reports. MORE
Last year, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) named the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) a "hate group" for their numerous affiliations with racist and white supremacist organizations. A new SPLC report details the views of FAIR's founder, Dr. John Tanton. Some excerpts
Thanks to Media Matters for catching this smear of Muslim immigrants, from none other than controversial radio talk show host Michael Savage. We invite our visitors and subscribers to listen to the audio themselves. MORE
Last week, Lou Dobbs held his "Independent Convention" to highlight "the issues that matter to ordinary Americans." But even though immigration ranks towards the bottom of issues important to American voters, Lou just couldn’t help himself. MORE

A report issued by a progressive grass-roots organization argues that pro-immigrant policies enacted by state governments have outnumbered and outweighed the punitive policies aimed at new immigrants. The study also states that the use of immigration as a "wedge" issue has been unsuccessful. MORE
In “How Many Americans?", Steven Camarota paints a doomsday scenario in which historically normal levels of immigration would cause our nation to become too “crowded.” Unfortunately for Mr. Camarota, the experts he cites don’t actually support his conclusion. MORE
The Los Angeles Times reports on the difficulty immigration defendants have in acquiring adequate legal representation. Because immigration proceedings fall under civil law, defendants are not afforded free counsel. MORE
The Equal Rights Center, a non-profit civil rights organization based in Washington, DC, has a released a new report titled "Ten Harmful Misconceptions About Immigration." The report offers extensive information rebutting common myths about immigrants, including several citations to research done by Truth In Immigration. We applaud the Center's effort to improve the public debate on immigration
On August 27, the Associated Press reported:
A day after the largest single-workplace immigration raid in U.S. history, Elizabeth Alegria was too scared to send her son to school and worried about when she'd see her husband again.
Nearly 600 suspected illegal immigrants were swept up in a raid at a Howard Industries plant in Mississippi.
The New York Times reports that judges selected during three years of an illegal patronage-style process have rejected requests for asylum at a higher rate than other judges in the Justice Department's immigration court system
A recent study by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) found that non-citizens, including undocumented immigrants, are less likely to visit an emergency department for medical treatment. The report is another blow to the myth that undocumented immigrants are a disproportionate strain on local hospitals. MORE
Neighborhood Centers Inc., a Houston-based organization with the mission of “bringing resources, education and connection to underserved neighborhoods,” recently put out a myth-busting booklet on immigrants. We applaud NCI’s efforts to improve the immigration debate. MORE
The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice recently announced the guilty plea of a former Customs and Border Protection officer who violated the civil rights of two undocumented immigrants. MORE
Santiago Perez, a former U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer, pleaded guilty [on August 19] in federal court in Houston to violating the civil rights of a Guatemalan national and a Mexican national, who had crossed the border into the United States.
In pleading guilty, Perez admitted that in December 2006 near Falcon Heights, Texas, he struck an individual from Guatemala in the head with his service pistol after the individual had attempted to flee. The blow produced a significant gash on the victim’s head.
