Hi (Your Friend's Name),

I'm writing to you to ask for your help. On June 17, 2009, the defendants on trial for fatally beating Luis Ramirez were sentenced to six and seven months in county jail on simple assault and alcohol-related convictions, respectively. Despite the evidence of a hate-driven attack that resulted in the death of a human being, the defendants were convicted of minor crimes and the corresponding convictions and sentences are wholly disproportionate to the crimes committed.

Unfortunately, this violent hate crime is not an isolated incident. According to the FBI Hate Crime Statistics Report, hate crimes committed against Latinos have risen 40 percent within the last five years. Many more of these crimes go unreported because of fear of local authorities or further targeting.

That is why I’m asking you join me in signing a petition asking Congress to swiftly pass the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 and get it to the President as quickly as possible. This legislation will help bring justice to cases like Luis's, and provide a deterrent to those who think of turning their hateful ideologies into violent acts. I really hope you’ll offer your support in the fight for justice for people like Luis Ramirez, people just like you and me.
