MALDEF STATEMENT ON CITY OF LODI'S MOVE TOWARDS DISTRICT-BASED ELECTION SYSTEM

December 12, 2017

(Los Angeles, CA) - Thomas A. Saenz, president and general counsel of MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund), released the following statement today following a vote by the Lodi City Council to adopt a resolution of intent to move from an at-large to a district-based election system.

"Today's vote is a positive step toward city governance that better reflects the Lodi population. The Latino community in Lodi, as well as other communities, will have an improved opportunity to elect candidates of their choosing under a district system. The City is thus moving toward a more representative form of governance."
