Los Angeles Multicultural Education Collaborative

The Los Angeles Multicultural Educational Collaborative (LAMEC) is a BP-funded initiative to build community empowerment, and mobilization through parent and youth leadership training centered in K-12 academic success, college access and civic engagement. This historic, multi-faceted collaborative union among MALDEF, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), the Los Angeles Urban League is aimed at creating cross-cultural unity and developing educational solutions across ethnic, racial, class and cultural lines in Southern California.

The LAMEC partners focus their efforts on three areas: youth leadership and access to higher education, parent leadership and community involvement, and a parent organization network (PON), a growing association of regional parent advocacy groups.

LAMEC’s main programs include:

Youth Leadership:
Each of the LAMEC partners support and develop youth advocates through after-school workshops that incorporate college awareness, civil rights and the arts as a means to help high school students become active leaders in their schools and communities. Youth from the three partner organizations come together through shared events, to increase college readiness, and interracial and intercultural awareness, tolerance and acceptance. MALDEF's youth leadership program CREATE! offers students the opportunity to learn about the civi engagement process through creative mediums of expression.

Parent Leadership and Community Involvement:
LAMEC’s parent leadership programs enable parents to be effective educational partners, and advocates for their children, their schools and the community. A central focus of these programs is helping parents understand the education system, higher education opportunities, and financial literacy as vital keys to investing in their family’s future. MALDEF's Parent School Partnership (PSP) Program trains parents to take responsibility of their children's education.

Parent Organization Network:
LAMEC is leading the development of a regional parent network that provides strategic support to the advancement of a true grass-roots parent advocacy consortium for institutional change in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

LAMEC has been sponsored by BP.
