Staff Attorney - Sacramento, CA

Job Responsibilities: Under supervision of regional counsel and national senior litigation staff and in consultation with co-counsel inside and outside of MALDEF, devises and executes strategic plans in complex litigation through the following activities: conducts depositions and discovery, negotiates and monitors settlement agreements, and pursues attorney fee awards in civil rights litigation; conducts legal research and draft pleadings, briefs, and administrative complaints; devises investigation plans and investigates potential legal claims; prepares memoranda on budget and legal theory for approval of litigation by MALDEF management; responds to media inquiries, makes public presentations, and prepares community education materials regarding Latino rights; participates in the development of long-term strategic goals and objectives for the assigned program area(s) and also for the regional office; supervises volunteer and professional support staff assigned to assist litigation programs.

Qualifications and Experience: Juris Doctor or equivalent degree required; active bar membership in one or more states required. Eligibility for active bar membership in California is required. Bar membership in another Western or Southwestern state is desirable. Undergraduate or graduate instruction in public policy and/or social sciences is desirable. Federal and state court litigation experience, particularly in area of civil rights, immigration, or employment is desirable. Excellent research, writing, and communication skills required. The successful candidate will have knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues affecting Latino community. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is preferred. A willingness and ability to engage in local and national travel as needed is required.

Compensation: $50,500 to 80,500+ per year. Fixed salary scale commensurate with years of legal experience. Administrative Assistant (Part Time 20hrs/week) - Sacramento, CA

Job Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Legislative Staff Attorney, the Administrative Assistant provides the secretarial, clerical, and office administrative functions required in a small office, using initiative and judgment as necessary in the absence of the attorneys. The Administrative Assistant answers telephones taking and relaying messages and information; schedules appointments and meetings; prepares and processes incoming and outgoing mail and correspondence; maintains an office calendar and tickler system for important dates, deadlines, and other appointments; maintains the office filing system; drafts simple correspondence and memoranda; types testimony, fact sheets and talking points; proofreads documents for accuracy; performs clerical collation; puts together reports and exhibits; fills in forms precisely and without error; prepares expense forms and check requests; processes and maintains petty cash and cash disbursements; answers telephones and serves as receptionist.

Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate will have two (2) years experience performing secretarial or clerical tasks in professional office environment. Law and/or legislative office experience highly preferred. The successful candidate will have basic knowledge of legal terminology and basic understanding of legal/legislative systems and documents; knowledge of general organization of pleading/brief dockets and legal correspondence files; excellent computer skills, especially word processing, spreadsheets, and Internet. Knowledge of WordPerfect, MSWord, Adobe Acrobat and the Internet; knowledge of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling sufficient to proofread legal work and to compose simple correspondence; ability to read and understand rules and procedures sufficient to prepare and format documents; skill in typing and word processing at a minimum of 50 wpm; knowledge of both legal and general office procedures and routines. Candidates must be able to communicate fluently in both English and Spanish, including the ability to speak, read, write, understand, and translate from one language to the other.

Regional Counsel - Chicago, IL

Job Responsibilities: The Regional Counsel is responsible for the daily operations and overall management of the regional office. Within MALDEF's designated program areas, works with the President and General Counsel, Director of Litigation, staff attorneys, and other Regional Counsels to determine the litigation and public policy advocacy priorities for the Midwest regional office. Initiates and conducts litigation and provides regular guidance on legal issues, strategies, and points of law to regional office staff. Maintains docket of active litigation and directly participates in complex civil rights cases in multiple program areas. Provides general supervision, guidance and training to the regional office staff to ensure that appropriate investigations are initiated and conducted; that litigation is warranted, well thought-out, and effectively conducted; that advocacy positions and papers are well researched and effectively written and/or delivered; and that community education programs are successfully implemented. Supervises and manages the performance of the regional office staff including: attorneys, paralegals, and clerical staff. Acts as a MALDEF spokesperson for the region to the media and at special events or forums; develops and maintains a network of ties to other organizations and coalitions in order to further ongoing litigation and public policy advocacy. The Regional Counsel assists Development staff and the President and General Counsel in coordinating fundraising activities for the Chicago office.

Qualifications and Experience: Juris Doctor or equivalent degree required; active bar membership in one or more states required. Eligibility for active bar membership in Illinois required. Bar membership in another Midwestern state is desirable. At least five years of progressively responsible experience in civil rights and public interest law is required. Of this, at least three years should have involved litigation of complex or class action cases in federal and/or state courts and one year must have involved supervision of legal, paralegal and clerical personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent research, writing, and communication skills required. The successful candidate will have knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues affecting the Latino community and will be able to supervise legal, non-legal and administrative staff in a way that creates an effective team effort. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is preferred. A willingness and ability to engage in local and national travel as needed is required.

Compensation: $72,600 - $114,600+ per year. Fixed salary scale commensurate with years of legal experience.
