Special Events Associate - Los Angeles, CA

Job Responsibilities: The Special Events Associate interfaces with board members, staff members, corporate sponsors and regional community leaders to establish a strategy to increase donor involvement in development activities and public relations events. Works with various MALDEF staff, volunteer leadership, and vendors to execute successful and effective special event and program activities; coordinates all phases of special events and program activities including: program development, donor solicitation, publicity, and marketing; invitation lists; logistics; and post-event/program follow-up. With direction from the President & General Counsel and the Vice President of Development, creates an annual budget for individual events and programs, accurately estimates all expenses and revenues, and accounts for all actual costs associated with each event; negotiates with vendors to ensure best pricing for goods and services; and plans and executes follow-up communications and activity to develop and involve potential donors.

Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree and special events experience in a nonprofit or other setting required. A successful track record in event/program planning and donor development in a nonprofit setting; demonstrated volunteer management experience; knowledge of database management; and knowledge of office management and procedures are also required. Availability to work a variable schedule that includes overtime, evenings, and weekends is required. Must be able to travel by automobile or airplane as required, and must have a valid driver’s license, current liability insurance and access to a reliable automobile. Demonstrated knowledge of a broad range of successful event/program coordination activities such as: publicity; menu planning and food selection; theme decorations; entertainment; invitation/program design and printing; arrangements with hotel and conference services and facilities; protocol; utilization of volunteer and staff resources; budgeting and cost containment; on-site coordination and problem-solving. Demonstrated success in event planning, with the ability to develop and provide creative, well-planned and executed events/programs; to handle a multiplicity of tasks and details simultaneously; and to function well in a pressure sensitive environment. Effective interpersonal skills; strong written and verbal English communication skills; excellent organizational and time management skills; flexibility, sound judgment, excellent follow-through, diplomacy, and sensitivity to diverse audiences are essential. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of the Internet and Microsoft Office programs.

Compensation: $35,000+ per year DOE plus benefits. Legislative Staff Attorney - Chicago, IL

Job Responsibilities: Analyzes and drafts legislation, policy issues and proposals, governmental regulations, rules, and executive orders. Researches, analyzes, and prepares recommendations, position papers, testimony and other documents. Participates in developing short- and long-term plans and strategies for legislative analysis and advocacy, preparing memoranda on potential and pending legislation. Meets regularly with state legislators and/or their staff, and attends hearings, press conferences, and relevant legislative meetings to submit written materials, to present MALDEF's position on issues and legislation, and to obtain information. Develops and maintains an appropriate network of ties to other organizations, experts, and interested and knowledgeable individuals; initiates and maintains coalitions; and attends and presents at community events. Prepares reports of substantive legislative trends and relevant actions initiated and taken to promote advocacy of positions and maintains time sheets reflecting areas and advocacy work performed. Works closely with communications staff to develop media relationships to obtain press coverage for policy positions and may participate in litigation as needed. Ensures timely compliance with all applicable registration and reporting related to advocacy activities.

Qualifications and Experience: Juris Doctor or equivalent degree required. At least 3 years progressively responsible experience in civil rights and public interest fields are preferred. Evidence of ability to apply legal or other training to legislative analysis and drafting is required. Excellent research, writing, and communication skills required. Legislative experience is a plus. Knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues affecting the Latino community preferred. Knowledge of civil rights policy and law, immigration policy and law, employment policy and law, and/or education policy and law is desirable. Undergraduate and graduate majors and courses directly relevant to civil rights and advocacy concerns are also desirable. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is preferred.

Compensation: $50,500 to $85,000+ per year. Fixed salary scale commensurate with years of legal experience. Staff Attorney (Litigator) - Washington, D.C.

Job Responsibilities: In consultation with co-counsel inside and outside of MALDEF, devises and executes strategic plans in complex litigation through the following activities: conducts depositions and discovery, negotiates and monitors settlement agreements, and pursues attorney fee awards in civil rights litigation; conducts legal research and drafts pleadings, briefs, and administrative complaints; devises investigation plans and investigates potential legal claims; prepares memoranda on budget and legal theory for approval of litigation by MALDEF management; responds to media inquiries, makes public presentations, and prepares community education materials regarding Latino rights; participates in the development of long-term strategic goals and objectives for the assigned program areas and also for the regional office; supervises volunteer and professional support staff assigned to assist litigation programs.

Qualifications and Experience: Juris Doctor or equivalent degree required; active bar membership in one or more states or the District of Columbia required. Minimum of three years’ experience in conducting civil litigation is required. Eligibility for active bar membership in District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia is required. Undergraduate or graduate instruction in public policy and/or social sciences is desirable. Federal and state court litigation experience in areas of civil rights, immigration, employment, education or voting rights is desirable. Excellent research, writing, and communication skills required. The successful candidate will have knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues affecting Latino community. Regional Counsel - Chicago, IL

Job Responsibilities: The Regional Counsel is responsible for the daily operations and overall management of the regional office. Within MALDEF's designated program areas, works with the President and General Counsel, Director of Litigation, staff attorneys, and other Regional Counsels to determine the litigation and public policy advocacy priorities for the Midwest regional office. Initiates and conducts litigation and provides regular guidance on legal issues, strategies, and points of law to regional office staff. Maintains docket of active litigation and directly participates in complex civil rights cases in multiple program areas. Provides general supervision, guidance and training to the regional office staff to ensure that appropriate investigations are initiated and conducted; that litigation is warranted, well thought-out, and effectively conducted; that advocacy positions and papers are well researched and effectively written and/or delivered; and that community education programs are successfully implemented. Supervises and manages the performance of the regional office staff including: attorneys, paralegals, and clerical staff. Acts as a MALDEF spokesperson for the region to the media and at special events or forums; develops and maintains a network of ties to other organizations and coalitions in order to further ongoing litigation and public policy advocacy. The Regional Counsel assists Development staff and the President and General Counsel in coordinating fundraising activities for the Chicago office.

Qualifications and Experience: Juris Doctor or equivalent degree required; active bar membership in one or more states required. Eligibility for active bar membership in Illinois required. Bar membership in another Midwestern state is desirable. At least five years of progressively responsible experience in civil rights and public interest law is required. Of this, at least three years should have involved litigation of complex or class action cases in federal and/or state courts and one year must have involved supervision of legal, paralegal and clerical personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent research, writing, and communication skills required. The successful candidate will have knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues affecting the Latino community and will be able to supervise legal, non-legal and administrative staff in a way that creates an effective team effort. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is preferred. A willingness and ability to engage in local and national travel as needed is required.

Compensation: $72,600 - $114,600+ per year. Fixed salary scale commensurate with years of legal experience.
